About me
Well, a little about me!
My name is Wil Davies, I was born in Swansea, in the UK and live here together with my wife and family. I have been painting and wargaming since I was 11 years old. I am the proud owner of VOODOOWORX which was launched in 2009, we produce high quality display plinths, highly detailed scenery/terrain and accessories for wargamingers and painters.
I remember my introduction to the hobby was on the school bus one morning when a friend of mine produced from his school bag a squad of half painted Space Orks; from that moment on I was hooked
I always wanted my minis to look like the ones I saw every month in White Dwarf but sadly they never did and probably still don’t today lol. But it meant that until a couple of years ago I had never completed an entire squad/ regiment….. that’s right NEVER!! Something would usually go drastically wrong and I would I get so cheesed off I would move on to something else. My bedroom when I was a kid was a graveyard of half painted minis.
I dread to think how much money I spent on the hobby as a kid but I have good memories of my friends and I scraping together all the money we could find (usually our school dinner money) so that we could get the latest boxed games like Necromunda on the day of release and then put all the scenery together to have mammoth battles in the garage at my parents house.
In 2006, I entered my first ever painting competition with a Dwarf Warrior at the local Games Workshop store which I won. For winning I received a limited edition canvas Warhammer Rule book.
In 2007, my local Games Workshop was moved and the new store had a grand opening. White Dwarf sent its editor Owen Rees to take photos of the event and while he was there he picked out an Imperial Fist sergeant that I had painted in the cabinet. I was pretty gob smacked when he said he wanted to take it back to Nottingham with him to photograph and put it in the June edition of White Dwarf. It appeared on page 107 of Issue 331.
Later that year I decided to bite the bullet and enter Golden Demon for the first time ever. I entered a squad of Imperial Fist Terminators into the 40K Squad category. It made the cut but sadly it did not get me a statuette. I was really chuffed to get as far as I did because I had only started the squad a couple of weeks before and hadn’t finished the entry until 4a.m. on the morning of the competition. After which I had a 3 hour car journey to Birmingham (don’t worry, I slept while my wife drove the car). For future entries I am going to allow a good few months to work on my entries and hopefully I will do better!
In 2008 I entered the GD Single 40K Miniature catagory with my Space Wolf Lord in terminator armour, it was one of the last ones on the table at the end of the judging along with seven others but alas it was not meant to be and I got another pin and certificate.
2009 proved to be a very good year, I won Gold in the Duel Category at the UK Golden Demon in Birmingham. My first trophy after 3 years of trying, but hopefully not my last.
I must admit that I have mostly played Games Workshop games for my 16 years in the hobby and they are still my favourite by far. Painting the figures is now my real passion, but I do look forward to making some more time to get back into the gaming side of things too.
My armies are currently a Death Korps of Kreig army which is a bit of a long term project. I also have a fledgling Space Wolves and an Ork army too. For the world of Warhammer I am collecting a Night Goblin and a High Elf army. This changes quite often as I am a bit of an army hopper!!!
The main reason for me creating this site was to share pictures of my work together with tips and tricks I have picked up along the way. Hopefully you will like my work and find the site of some use. You can find some examples of my work on CMON, thanks to all of you who have voted by the way!
